A near-surface 5.5.-magnitude earthquake struck at 8:15 around 22 km to the southwest of Methoni, with its epicenter in sea area. No casualties or serious damages have been reported so far. The tremors were felt in several districts of the Peloponnese.
Head of the Athens Geodynamic Institute Gerasimos Papadopoulos has stated that this area presents high seismic activity, and an earthquake of this magnitude is not something alarming, given also that its epicenter was in sea. In any case, residents of areas where landslides occur or of areas near old decrepit buildings should be cautious.
