An unchecked wildfire raging in northern Evia has resulted in the evacuation of communities Kontodespoti and Stavros in the Dirfia and Messapies municipality, authorities said on Sunday.

"The fire has a very wide front," the mayor of Dirfia and Messapies Giorgos Psaras said, "and is now at a pine forest, moving fast towards Psachna. Despite constant drops of water by aircraft and helicopters, it has been impossible to check its path."

A total of 28 fire trucks and 62 firepeople are at the site, and expected to be joined by more forces from central Greece.

Traffic between the Chalkida highway and North Evia, the island east of Attica, has been banned and the area has low visibility due to the smoke.

The fire started around 15:20 in a pine forest and appears to be heading towards the evacuated villages.
