Despite the initial announcements by the authorities, the oil spill that was created in the eastern coastline of Salamina island has now reached the area of Glyfada due to the west winds blowing in the Saronic Gulf. Pollution control vessels are still trying intensively to control the damage in the area, supported by a vessel of the European Committee for Safety and Environment that has come to Greece’s aid.
“The reasons for the sinking of the tanker, which carried 2,500 tons of fuel, are not yet clear, given that there was no collision, nor rough sea or storm. The pollution is spreading at an alarming speed”, commented Piraeus Vice-Prefect Giorgos Gavrilis. The tanker is sunk at around 30-meter depth and the pumping-down of the fuel remaining in its tanks will start in the next hours.
