According to an article by the German newspaper “Die Welt” there is a possibility of the Parthenon marbles to be returned to Greece, as a side effect of Britain’s exit from the European Union.

The newspaper explains that in the context of the negotiations for Brexit, Greece, taking into account the legal parameters, could demand from United Kingdom the return of the Marbles, and considers that such a venture has great potential.

“Die Welt” also reminds the readers of the fact that Lord Elgin removed sculptures and fragments from the Parthenon “under dubious circumstances” to sell them, in 1816, to the British Museum, where they are still exhibited today.

It also estimates that “with the planned Brexit, the Greeks believe that the time has come to bring back to Athens these precious works of art.”
