ERT1, the first channel of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, is adding to its program the critically acclaimed and commercially successful series “Peaky Blinders”. Created by Steven Knight, the series, a 2013 British production, is a drama based on the real Birmingham gang Peaky Blinders.
Featuring Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sam Neill, Annabelle Wallis, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole, Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody, and Noah Taylor, “Peaky Blinders” takes place on the streets of Birmingham in 1919’s post-WWI England, where it follows the lives and doings of the Peaky Blinders gang members. Winston Churchill himself instructs Inspector Chester Campbell to return from Belfast, where he was charged with dealing with the IRA, the Communists, the gangs and the anarchists in the city, just so he can do away with Peaky Blinders.
The series found success with audiences and critics alike, being hailed as BBC’s smartest, most exciting dramatic series in recent years. The extraordinary cast, the ambience of an era gone by, the direction, the amazing costumes and each scene’s masterful musical scoring are the most important factors that make the series stand out, as it marries a rock and roll journey touching on Nick Cave, Artic Monkeys, PJ Harvey, White Stripes, and Johnny Cash, with the notorious gang’s style.
On Monday, March 12, at 10pm, ERT1 will be broadcasting the series’ first episode, with the second one following at the same time on the next day.
Episode 1 summary
Thomas Shelby, leader of Birmingham’s Peaky Blinders gang, is troubled after finding a load of weapons. He knows that keeping them will get him in trouble with the Law, but on the other hand his gang will get extremely powerful. At the same time, he infuriates his brother, Arthur, because he fixes a horse without getting permission from Billy, the man who arranges the races.
The Shelbies will really step in it when inspector Chester Campbell -previously placed in Belfast by Foreign Minister Winston Churchill- is charged with returning the stolen weapons to the factory without the Press getting wind of the events. Meanwhile, the Shelbies don’t know that Grace, the new waitress working at the neighborhood pub, is actually a secret agent working for Campbell.
