Queen Sofia of Spain, wife of Spain's former reigning monarch King Juan Carlos who abdicated in 2014, will visit the island of Crete in the near future, said Spanish Ambassador to Greece Enrique Viguera during his meeting on Wednesday with the regional governor Stavros Arnaoutakis.

The Spanish diplomat said that the Spanish royal will attend events for the 40th anniversary of the founding of the University of Crete, and will also visit archaeological sites.

Speaking of his meeting with the governor, the Spanish ambassador said, "It was my first visit to Crete, as I was appointed ambassador of Spain to Greece in the last six months."

Viguera added, "I will revisit the island very soon, as Queen Sofia is going to visit it shortly and is expected to also visit Ancient Eleftherna and participate in events for the 40-year anniversary since the foundation of the University of Crete."
