NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, welcomed on Wednesday the historic name agreement between Athens and Skopje and invited the FYROM government to start talks to join the western alliance.

When the historic agreement for the name issue has been completed, NATO will be in a position to formally invite FYROM with its new name to become the 30th member state, said Stoltenberg at a press conference.

"It is a unique opportunity for the people of FYROM and it is their decision," said Stoltenberg, highlighting that if the agreement is not supported by the people of FYROM, then the country will not become a member of NATO. "There is no other way than to change the name of the country."
