The documentaries that win the “Golden Alexander” award at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, will now have the opportuity to enter the Oscar race.

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be collaborating with 28 of the world’s top festivals in order to compile the final list of the documentaries that can claim the Oscar. The Academy enables the filmmakers who win the first prize at any of these festivals, to enter automatically the selection list.

In a competitive international film landscape, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival further strengthens its position and role in the discovery of new talents, and converse with the most important festivals in the world. The 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will take place in March 2019.

The American Film Academy list includes the Berlin Film Festival (Germany), Cannes Film Festival (France), IDFA – Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (Holland), HOT DOCS (Canada), CPH: DOX – Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (Denmark), Sheffield Festival (UK), Visions du Reel (France) and the Leipzig International Documentary Festival (Germany).
