The conflict over selling defense equipment to Saudi Arabia is rising in view of Monday’s discussion in the Greek Parliament, in the presence of political party leaders. New Democracy spokesperson Maria Spyraki stated that PM Alexis Tsipras will be called to answer the following questions: why is there a mediator in a transnational agreement, who is Mr. Papadopoulos that appears as the mediator, what is his relationship with the Defense Minister and in which transactions has he been involved. Mrs. Spyraki also stated that New Democracy will present data demonstrating that Mr. Papadopoulos is linked to the Ministry of National Defense.
On his part, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos stressed that this was a purely transnational agreement that was approved by New Democracy as well, before the respective parliamentary committee. Consequently, the allegations about political liability are not valid and there is no mediator at all; on the other hand, it is permitted in transnational agreements, if the other party wishes so, to appoint a representative that may be recognized by us, on condition that he/she is explicitly authorized, said Mr. Kammenos.
