On Sunday night, residents of Maries, on Zakynthos island, were instructed to evacuate their village as a raging fire had reached near their houses. The firefighting forces focused on creating firebreaks. Since the early hours of Monday, aerial firefighting forces have been trying to control the fire. Five Canadair aircrafts, 4 helicopters, 3 army bulldozers, as well as 150 firefighters with 53 vehicles are in the area.
There is great suspicion of arsons, given that the fire had been subdued to the north of Maries village but three other fires then broke out to the east, although all seemed clear up to that moment. It is pointed out that 82 fires have broken out in total in Zakynthos since the beginning of the fire season.
