Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras put the issue of a social Europe on the agenda of the European Council Summit, taking an important initiative in this direction. Mr. Tsipras stressed that the European pillar of social rights is important and should be implemented, as it will balance the fiscal compact, and added that the European semester (the procedure of coordinating economic and financial policies) should include binding social targets. He also proposed that a reference be included in the conclusions of the Summit.

The European Commission, France, Italy, Sweden and Portugal, among others, supported the proposition, while Germany has left the issue open. The issue will again be discussed in the European Council in March. Within this scope, the Commission has committed to returning with propositions on monitoring the implementation of the European pillar of social rights.
