On Tuesday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be visiting Kastelorizo to inaugurate two new desalination plants that will produce 400 cubic meters of water per day, which will meet the daily needs of the island’s residents. Mr. Tsipras will then travel to Rhodes, where he will address the 13th Regional Development Conference of the Southern Aegean.

“Kastellorizo will become a self-sufficient island in terms of water supply, and will not depend on the transport of water by ship, especially during summer months”, Deputy Minister for Shipping and Island Policy Nektarios Santorinios said. The minister also stressed that for the first time, self-sufficiency of potable water is achieved, and the cost per cubic meter is reduced to around 1/5 of the price that the Greek State had been paying up to now for the transport of water by ships.
