A total of 1,000 refugees and migrants of various nationalities belonging to vulnerable groups are scheduled to leave the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos on Saturday, on a special journey by the "Nissos Samos" ferry to a destination that has yet to be decided.

The transfer will be held in the context of migration ministry's efforts to decongest the island of migrants and refugees needing special protection as much as possible.

On Wednesday, 224 migrants and refugees left Chios port on Wednesday evening for Piraeus and afterwards for refugee reception camps in the mainland.

According to the ministry's figures, 8,322 people were hosted on Lesvos on Wednesday, 2,704 on Chios and 2,289 on Samos.
