A large crowd from all over Greece gathered, on Sunday, at Syntagma Square to demonstrate in favor of the Greek identity of Macedonia and against the use of the term “Macedonia” in the name of FYROM. The police estimate that around 140,000 people participated in the demonstration, while coordinators speak of 1.5 million people. Songwriter and composer Mikis Theodorakis, who was one of the speakers, called the people to say “No” to the misrepresentation of history, and asked a referendum regarding the name of FYROM.
On behalf of the Church of Greece, Metropolitan of Syros Dorotheos stressed that the Church cannot accept the term “Macedonia” or any other derivative as part of the name of another state. Several MPs were present at the demonstration, as well as former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, President of the Union of Centrists Vassilis Leventis and the General Secretary of Golden Dawn, Nikos Michaloliakos.
