Τhe Canadian Initiative for Lesvos, the Commission which for nine months has headed the fundraising effort for the renovation and conversion of an old Mytilene mansion into a hostel for children, managed by “To xamogelo tou paidiou”, has announced the fruit of its efforts to be a final amount of 214,476 Canadian dollars.
The University of Miami has recently become the site of a statue of Dr. Papanikolaou, the Greek doctor who came up with the world-wide known method for detecting cervical cancer, a method which saved and continues to save the lives of millions of women. The statue was placed at the entrance of the university’s Cancer Research Institute. The initiative for the statue belongs to Michael Servos, currently the president of the Hellenic Foundation of America. The statue’s unveiling was attended by Greece’s General Consul in Tampa, Adamantia Klotsa, University of Miami officials, and members of the Hellenic American community. Greek PM, Alexis Tsipras, sent a letter for the occasion.
