Pollution control vessels are intensively trying to control the oil spill that was caused in the sea area of Salamina island, after the small anchored tanker “AGIA ZONI II” sank last Sunday. Some parts of the oil spill have been drifted away by winds to the sea area off Piraeus. Hellenic Coast Guard officers have stated that the pollution will be controlled fully and effectively. Floating barriers have been placed at the spot of the shipwreck, while sealing works have already been concluded.
Shipping and Island Policy Minister Panagiotis Kouroublis has stated that there is no risk of further leak from the tanker. “The area is dead”, told AMNA Mayor of Salamina Isidora Nannou-Papathanassiou, stressing that local authorities will proceed to all legal actions to find the people responsible and ensure compensation for environmental restoration and for the residents that were afflicted.
