BRUSSELS (ANA/ N. Roubos) In a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday, ahead of the NATO Summit and Merkel's meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras asked her to intervene for the release of the two Greek soldiers being held in Edirne prison in Turkey.

Also attending the meeting was Defence Minister Panos Kammenos, who briefed the German chancellor on the case of the two Greek soldiers illegally detained without charge since they were first intercepted by a Turkish patrol in March.

Tsipras is also scheduled to contact Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on the telephone in the next few hours in order to coordinate their stance ahead of a bilateral meeting between the Greek prime minister and Erdogan on Thursday afternoon.

The Greek premier also spoke with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who showed interest in the progress of the Greek economy and the country's prospects after it exits the programme on August 20, and Iceland's Prime Minister Katr?n Jakobsd?ttir.
