The actions against the use of disposable plastics have begun on the island of Sikinos, as a part of the SEA CHANGE initiative of the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation and in cooperation with the Municipality of Sikinos.
This two-party collaboration was sealed at an event held at the Primary School of Sikinos, in the presence of residents and entrepreneurs of the island. At the event, free biodegradable straws and reusable glasses were distributed in the place of disposable. The residents were informed of the benefits of eliminating the use of disposable plastic via the documentaries “EGEO – The Sea for Me” and “Straws” and committed to take action.
“We are changing our daily habits. We make simple moves that lead to better results for the environment”, said the Mayor of Sikinos, Vasilis Marakis.
As part of the initiative, the SEA CHANGE team together with volunteer residents and in cooperation with the Municipality, carried out a clean-up on two of the island’s beaches.
On the same day, the island’s entrepreneurs were informed on the ways to change their practices regarding straws and other disposable items and were invited to contribute effectively to the protection of the Cyclades marine environment.
