BRUSSELS (ANA/Ch. Vassilaki) --- Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' recent statements announcing the distribution of one-off welfare benefits totaling 1.4 billion euros are not in contradiction with what has been agreed, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

Asked to comment on the prime minister's statement, the spokesperson of the European Commission said that the ongoing discussions with the Greek government include, among others, proposals to use part of the estimated surplus for the creation of a fiscal "safety net" but also for "targeted actions that are fully in line with the memorandum's commitments."

"Yesterday's announcement appears to be broadly in line with these discussions, which have not yet been concluded," the same spokesperson told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, adding that "details" should now be fully examined and conclude discussions with the Greek authorities at the end of the month.
