On Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is visiting Athens, where he will meet with President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos and with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. On the occasion of his visit, the Turkish President talked on SKAI channel, where he stressed the need to further improve Greek-Turkish relationships, sending the message that the bad relationships of the two countries belong to the past. However, he asked that the Lausanne Treaty be updated and called once more for the extradition of the eight Turkish officers.

The reaction of the Greek government was instant. Government spokesperson Dimitris Tzanakopoulos stated that this interview of Mr. Erdoğan raises concerns and questions, and stressed, “the respect of the Lausanne Treaty is the only and non-negotiable foundation on which an honest cooperation between the two countries may be built”.
