Ioannina police located and confiscated two travel bags with antiquities in a remote area near Arta on Tuesday morning, in the fourth incident of artefact smuggling in the last two months.
Acting on a tip-off, police found the two bags with antiquities dating from the Archaic to the Byzantine period "that were waiting for the recipient".
The Ioannina Ephorate archaeologist who examined the content of the bags said they are fall under the antiquities and cultural heritage protection law. The antiquities will be examined in detail by archaeologists for confirmation of date and value.
The objectes included mostly fragments and some coins dated between Classical and Hellenistic periods. The oldest objects appear to be three vessel handles dated to prehistoric times.
