At 5:30 in the morning, a police raid took place in the central square of Sappho in Mytilene for the evacuation of refugees and immigrants, after violent incidents during the night. The police forces made foreigners, most of them Afghans, to leave the area and get on buses, which transferred them to the camp of Moria.
During the night, Sappho Square and the alleys of the city’s historic centre turned into a battlefield. Around 200 persons, mainly members of far-right organizations, tried to break through the police cordon around refugees and immigrants. They lit bins on fire, and threw firecrackers and squibs, while the police forces used tear gas to repel them. During the incidents, many people were injured, mainly immigrants and refugees, and were taken to the hospital for the first aid.
