On Tuesday afternoon, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim contacted Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on the phone to discuss the incident in Imia. The Greek Premier asked that the ever-increasing provocative Turkish violations in the territorial waters and the airspace of the Greek islands in the Aegean be immediately terminated and that the tension be deescalated. According to an announcement by the Press Office of the Prime Minister’s General Secretariat, Mr. Tsipras also “strongly stressed to his Turkish counterpart that incidents as that of yesterday in the area of Imia directly undermine Greek-Turkish and EU-Turkish relations, and violate international law.”
The two Prime Ministers agreed on intensifying the talks regarding Confidence-building Measures. Mr. Yildirim argued that Tuesday’s incident in the Aegean was not the result of a deliberate action.
