After winning the prize for Best Script together with Eftimis Filippou in 2011 for the film “Alps”, cinema director Yorgos Lanthimos returns to the 75th International Film Festival in Venice, to present his new film “The Favourite”, and compete for the Golden Lion. It is a satirical period drama, that takes place in 18th century Spain where the war of succession is raging. It tells the story of three women: Queen Anna, Duchess Sarah Churchill and Baroness Abigail Masham. The three main characters are interpreted by Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weiss while the original script is written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara.

“Early 18th Century. England is at war with the French. The fragile Queen Anna occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah rules the country in her place, while taking care of the Queen’s health and temperament. When Abigail, a young maid arrives at the palace, Sarah is fascinated and takes her under her protection. For Abigail it is an opportunity to return to its aristocratic roots. As the tactics of the war stand barriers for Sarah, she takes her place on the Queen’s side. The upcoming friendship gives Abigail the opportunity to fulfill her aspirations and will let no woman, husband, politicians or rabbits stand in her way. ”

The film is scheduled to be released in American theaters on November 23 by Fox Searchlight and it will premiere at the 56th New York Film Festival on September 28th.
