During the meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, in Athens on Monday, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides announced that Greece will receive new funding amounting to 180 million euros. This fund will be used, among others, to upgrade the “ESTIA” program, which provides aid to refugees so that they find accommodation in urban areas outside camps, as well as regular financial aid.
So far, this program has created more than 23,000 accommodation places in urban areas, and has launched a system of financial aid supporting more than 41,000 refugees and asylum seekers. The European Commission has provided Greece with more than 1.5 billion euros in total, through several forms of funding, for the management of the humanitarian situation, migration and external frontiers.
