The Ministry of Culture 2020 has declared 2020 as the “Year of Melina Mercouri”, featuring a series of events to mark the 100-year anniversary since the birth of internationally-acclaimed Greek actress and former culture minister, Melina Mercouri.
The program kicks off with a presentation of the “Proceedings of the International Workshop for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures” (29/1) and the screening of a video of Melina Mercouri’s work with a special focus on her efforts toward the repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.
A series of commemorative events will follow, such as the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation’s “Our Melina” (26/2), two photo exhibitions at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (end of March); one that focuses on the efforts for the return of the Parthenon sculptures from Britain and another on antiquities smuggling.
On the day of Mercouri’s birthday, October 18, a celebration entitled “Piraeus Celebrates Melina” will take place at the Piraeus Municipal Theater.
A large exhibition is also scheduled for July in Technopolis, showcasing photos, posters, costumes, Melina’s dressing room and her correspondence with celebrities of her time. The exhibition is organized by IMM with the assistance of Manuela Pavlidou and Yorgos Pilihos, is curated by Nikos Kaltsas and will run through September.
Especially for this year, National Theater Director, Dimitris Lignadis, announced that the Rex National Theater will host the Melina Mercouri’s theatrical awards ceremony in an event dedicated to educating the youth.
Finally, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Melina Mercouri Foundation is organizing a workshop dedicated to the work of Melina Mercouri as Minister of Culture with a special emphasis on the DIPETHE institutions and their importance.
