Acropolis’ new lighting system will be unveiled tonight at 20:00, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Minister of Culture and Sport, Lina Mendoni and the President of the Onassis Foundation, Antonis S. Papadimitriou.

The event will be live streamed on the Ministry of Culture and Sport website and the Onassis Foundation YouTube channel, and will also be aired live on ERT1.

For the first time, the lighting will highlight the Holy Rock’s monuments, emphasizing their volume and geometry from every possible aspect. The marbles, brighter than ever, reflect every aspect, shape and natural material, highlighting each monument’s decoration.

The new lighting will highlight nine points of the ancient monument: the Acropolis hill, the walls, the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, the Theater of Dionysus, the Stoa of Eumenes and the Sanctuary of Dionysus.

Five more monuments will be illuminated for the first time: the choragic monument of Thrasyllos, the Asklepieion of Athens, the caves of Apollo and Aglauros/ Klepsydra, and the Sanctuary of Aphrodite.

According to the Ministry of Culture announcement, the new lighting system gradients the intensities and shades of white, between the outer and inner parts of the monuments, in order to highlight their architectural elements and to perceive their relief, depth and plasticity.
