Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will visit today the town of Kirkovo in Bulgaria, for the inauguration together with his Bulgarian counterpart, Boyko Borisov, the construction phase of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) pipeline, which is expected to become operational in 2020.

As diplomatic sources have pointed out, Greece is promoting all the infrastructure projects that can secure the conditions for secure energy supply in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, and in this context the IGB pipeline is an essential component of the vertical interconnection of the Balkans, as it strengthens our country’s position as an energy hub for the region, and has obvious economic benefits, since Greek companies will also be involved in the construction.

According to the same diplomatic sources, in a period of profound changes in the global energy and geopolitical map, by promoting the vertical corridor, Greece significantly upgrades its position as a pillar of stability and security in the region.
