Calls to the European Emergency Communication Service 112 made from Android mobile phones is now carried out with absolute precision, following the implementation of a program carried out by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Government, Google and the mobile telephony providers in Greece (Cosmote, Vodafone, Wind, Forthnet).
During the call, the device automatically activates its geolocation service and collects location data. Once the position of the mobile is found with sufficient accuracy, the information is sent immediately to 112.
The mechanism is activated automatically, if the caller uses existing mobile telephony technologies and the detection accuracy is less than 100 meters in 90% of cases.
The service is provided free of charge and works on all mobile phones that have Android operating system (version 4.1 or newer) and have any kind of connection with any mobile phone provider in Greece, when they are within the network of their provider and have unlocked the SIM card of the device.
