“I’m deeply moved by this dramatic situation. It was important for me to come here and express our European solidarity”, said President of the European Council, Charles Michel during his visit to Lesvos.

First of all, Mr. Michel wanted to express EU’s solidarity with the migrants, the Lesvos residents and all the workers in aid services and secondly, the will “to support the efforts made by the Greek authorities”.

“It is a common European challenge”, he said, making it clear that all European countries must mobilize, while countries like Greece, that are at the forefront of this issue, must be supported.

In a telephone conversation, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, discussed the refugee / migration issue and the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean in view of the forthcoming Extraordinary Session of the European Council. The German chancellor expressed Berlin’s intention to receive 1,553 refugees from the Greek islands. These refugees are family members who have applied for and received asylum.
