The Greek islanders’ mobilizations against the construction of new closed structures for migrants, were marked by serious incidents and injuries.

Clashes between residents and police took place in Lesvos resulting in many injuries on both sides, while several Chios residents attacked and injured nine riot police officers inside their hotel.

Thousands of people took part in protest rallies in Mytilene and Chios, while public services, schools, businesses and shops remained closed due to the general strike declared on the islands.

In an effort to de-escalate tension, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has taken the initiative and called for a meeting with the islands’ local authorities representatives, at the Maximos Mansion.
