Four people were killed and many more injured on Tuesday afternoon when a speedboat and a tourist boat carrying 25 people collided at sea off the Coast of Aegina Island in Saronikos Bay.
Circumstances of collision are yet unclear. According to sources, the speedboat rammed into the other vessel at high speed and cut it in half. The vessel’s captain and a five-year-old girl are among the dead. Search is under way for an unknown number of missing persons that were either on the boat or swimming in the area where the accident happened.
Five of the wounded tourists were transferred to hospitals in Athens. Some of the rest are currently at the island’s health centre for precautionary reasons while five of them have been released.
The owner of the speedboat was arrested but is not yet clear if he was driving the boat. Coast guard officers investigate into the causes of the accident.
