In the plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday 29th, Greek and foreign MPs asked a review of the rules for the mobilization of the Solidarity Fund. As a result, the European Commission will be able to contribute directly and in practice in tackling the natural disaster caused by the flood that hit Western Attica some days ago. According to the applicable rules, disasters must exceed 1.5% of GDP of the Region for the area to receive financial aid, which does not apply in this case.
Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu stressed that the Commission has committed to providing help “in any way possible” and that it is open in modifying cohesion programs in order to re-direct European funds for public investments and the recovery of the economic activity in the areas hit by the floods.
