UN special mediator for the naming dispute Matthew Nimetz has given Athens and Skopje two months’ grace to enter into deliberations and come up with a solution, considering that this is a chance that should not be missed. On Thursday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with Archbishop Ieronymos to inform him about the progress of the negotiations regarding the FYROM name issue. “No protests are needed at the time being, but rather national consensus, understanding and unity”, stressed the Archbishop after the meeting, while the Greek Premier stated once more that he respects the views and concerns of the Holy Synod, and asked from the Archbishop to contribute to ensuring national unity and a sense of responsibility.

On the other hand, New Democracy accuses the Prime Minister of unprecedented irresponsibility regarding the handling of the name issue. In an announcement, the party’s Press Office states that Alexis Tsipras has chosen to keep the opposition, the MPs and the people in the darkness for such a serious national issue, and to negotiate behind closed doors.
