In an official statement, Greece’s Foreign Ministry talks about “unacceptable references”, which undermine the trust of the two countries. This statement comes as a response to statements, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made in Smyrna.

“Greece is not going to be swept away in the instrumentalization of foreign policy to serve domestic political expediencies, or use history with terms that are offensive to neighboring countries,” states the Greek Foreign Ministry.

When addressing his party’s voters at his pre-election speech in Smyrna, Erdogan said among other things: “… Smyrna! You, that on September 9th, Mustafa Kemal and his army freed you once again. Smyrna you who throw the infidels in the sea and protect the helpless!”
