The former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Alberto Chissano was honored with the Democracy Award of the city of Athens, for his fundamental role in ending the civil war and the democratization of his country, as he led major socio-political reforms, culminating in the adoption of the Constitution in 1990.

With the award, given for the third consecutive year, the City of Athens honors personalities for their contribution to democracy, freedom and human rights.

During the award ceremony which took place in the Acropolis Museum on Sunday, the Mayor of Athens Mr. Giorgos Kaminis stressed the importance of the independence of justice and the defense of freedom of speech as mechanisms that ensure the integrity of democratic regimes.
