Police on Thursday announced the arrest of four foreign nationals from Afghanistan and Pakistan on charges of trafficking 65 irregular migrants, as well as their abduction and extortion. The arrests were made in a joint operation by the Thessaloniki Migration Management department and the Xanthi Border Police.

The 65 foreign nationals were being held against their will in a building in Volvi, with the suspects allegedly demanding 1,500-3,000 euros from each for their release.

Three of the suspects were arrested when they approached the building in a car to let off more irregular migrants in the early hours of Wednesday morning, while a fourth man acting as a guard was found inside. The migrants had entered Greece via the Greek-Turkish border.

An investigation is underway to locate possible additional members of the criminal outfit.
