French President Emmanuel Macron sent a stern message to Turkey after his meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, on Thursday in Paris.

“It would be a big mistake for the EU to leave the security in the eastern Mediterranean in the hands of other actors, mainly Turkey”, Macron said, adding that “those who violate maritime zones should be sanctioned.”

The French president denounced the violation of the sovereign rights of Cyprus and Greece by Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean and reiterated France’s full solidarity with the two countries.

Emmanuel Macron also stressed the importance of energy and security issues in this Mediterranean region and explained that they the subject of power struggles, particularly of Russia and Turkey, which are manifesting themselves in increasing intensity.
