According to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Athens asked Berlin to begin negotiations on the “practical” fulfilment of Greece’s requirements, noting that the issue “is of particular importance” both from a moral and a material point of view. Greece talks about a “pending issue,” while Germany has repeatedly rejected these claims.

The Greek government insists that the country should be compensated for the damage it suffered during the two world wars both for the victims of the German occupation as well as the loan Nazi Germany had imposed on Greece during the occupation.

Athens also calls for “the return of looted and illegally removed archaeological and other cultural assets”.
