Intense was the reaction of the Greek government for the decision of the Albanian authorities to proceed with the eviction of 19 families and the demolition of the Greek neighborhood in Himare.
In a statement, the Greek Foreign Ministry stressed that notices for the demolition of buildings were only sent to people of Greek origin and continued by underlining that such an approach leads to the conclusion that there is a plan for the circumvention of the Greek minority, reminding the Albanian authorities that the protection of property rights, minority rights in particular, is an integral part of the five EU conditions for starting accession negotiations with Albania.
Albanian authorities for their part argue that the legal procedures followed by the Municipality of Himare, which focus on transforming the city into a European tourist destination, are transparent and in line with the current legislation.
