Starting from January 1, 2017, Greek will be taught as a foreign language in Russian schools. The final decision was made by the Russian Minister of Education, Olga Vasilieva.

Pericles Mitkas, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Dean, stated that “this achievement comes as the result of a long and constant effort by the Aristotle University to promote the Greek language in the countries of the Black Sea zone.”

The new Consul General of Russia in Thessaloniki, Alexander Shcherbakov, pointed out that the introduction of the teaching of the Greek language in primary and secondary education in Russia “creates a strong foundation of Greek in Russia and the prospects for further cooperation in the fields of culture and education.”
