Greek PM Alexis Tsipras is in Sophia, on an official visit to Bulgaria on the occasion of the Greek-Bulgarian High-Level Cooperation Council summit. Mr. Tsipras met with his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov.

“We consider Greece and Bulgaria two highly important countries in the broader region of the Balkan peninsula. The present summit paves the path towards a close and constructive collaboration between two important countries on the Balkan Peninsula.”, Tsipras said.

Tsipras and Borisov pointed out the role of the two countries as pillars of stability in the region, at the troubled waters of the “neighbourhood”. They underlined their agreement for deeper cooperation within the context of EU and NATO in order for this role to be further strengthened and to ensure security, stability, peace and growth in the region.

Both prime ministers focused on the importance of energy cooperation between the two countries, with Tsipras noting that it would play a pivotal role in their relations. He also underlined that the construction of the Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB) pipeline as a section of the vertical corridor was a priority project that would boost the position of both countries on the region’s energy map and bring multiple benefits.
