Greek troops are likely to be deployed to Libya if there is a EU peacekeeping force, under the UN umbrella, according to senior diplomatic sources, following the EU Foreign Affairs Council decision to re-launch the “Sofia” naval operation in the Mediterranean, with a revised mandate exclusively controlling the arms embargo imposed on Libya.

On Monday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias expressed our country’s displeasure at the absence of any explicit reference in the Berlin Summit’s final conclusions regarding the invalidity of the Turkey-Libya memoranda, but added that the EU Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borell, assured him that the Union’s position remains the same and that these memoranda are illegal and do not produce any results.
