After a year-and-a-half operation under the management of a US company, the Shipyards in Neorio, Syros, were officially inaugurated on Wednesday.

The shipyards reopening was made possible after the investment of millions of euros and the repayment of debts to employees and suppliers.

In his statement, Onex Shipyards CEO Panos Xenokostas, said that the main goal is to make Neorio a model shipyard in Greece and to increase shipbuilding turnover in our country the way it was in the 80s, before the industry’s decline.

In his address, the Minister of Development, Adonis Georgiades, stressed that shipbuilding was a traditional sector of the Greek economy that is now starting anew. US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt, emphasized that the unit will even be able to claim contracts from the US Navy.
