The European Union has sent a clear message to Ankara to de-escalate tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in a telephone conversation with Tayyip Erdogan, once again called on Turkey to avoid activities that fuel tensions and expressed EU’s full solidarity with Greece and Cyprus.

He stressed, however, that the Union wants to have a constructive relationship with Ankara. For his part, Erdogan urged the EU to fulfill its commitment to justice and impartiality and to not allow Greece and other EU members to make moves that escalate tensions.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with the French President, Emanuel Macron at the Euro-Mediterranean Conference in Corsica on Thursday, and both men will send another message to mobilize and resolutely address the Turkish provocation.
