Greek athlete Anna Korakaki won the first gold medal for Greece in women’s 25m pistol on Tuesday evening, in the Rio Olympic Games, fending off Germany’s Monika Karsch.

This is the second medal of Rio for the 20-year-old Greek Olympic debutant as she earned bronze in the 10m air pistol event some 48 hours ago. She is the first Greek athlete in more than a century to win two medals in the same Olympics, since Konstantinos Tsiklitiras won gold and bronze in the Stockholm Games in 1912.

It is also the first gold medal for Greece in 12 years, as both in Beijing (2008) and in London (2012) the country’s athletes won silver and bronze.

Korakaki’s gold and bronze are the only Greek Olympic medals thus far.
