Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday, on the de-escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean region after the departure of the research ship Oruc Reis.

“NATO is an important platform for dialogue between the Allies. The situation must be resolved in the spirit of allied solidarity and in accordance with international law”, Jens Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter, noting that the conversation he had with the Greek Prime Minister, concerned the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the de-escalation talks being held in NATO.

For his part, the Greek Prime Minister stressed that the agreement on the resumption of exploratory contacts between Greece and Turkey is a positive step of rapprochement, “but there is a need for continuity and consistency in the efforts of de-escalation and the need to end the provocations in the Cypriot EEZ.”
