French President Emmanuel Macron in a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, “urged Ankara to fully respect the sovereignty of EU member states and international law and to refrain from any further action”, according to a statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry.

Macron and Erdogan had their first conversation in months following a stalemate between the two NATO allies over escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The French Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued after the telephone conversation between the two leaders, expressed hope that a dialogue between Turkey and Greece would continue and called for a similar approach regarding Cyprus, while added that the French and Turkish presidents have agreed to maintain contact.
