In his speech following a liturgy at the Cathedral of the 12 Holy Apostles, in the Bosporus district of Ferikoy, in Constantinople, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew warned that any conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque would turn millions of Christians around the world, against Islam.

The head of the Orthodoxy stressed that “Hagia Sophia as a museum is a place and a symbol of meeting, solidarity and mutual understanding between Christianity and Islam. It belongs not only to the one who owns the monument, but to all of humanity. The Turkish people have a great responsibility and the highest honor to highlight the universality of the monument”.
