For children on the broader autism spectrum, music provides a motive to interact with their environment, develop their communication skills and have positive experiences at the individual and family level. With this in mind, the Onassis Foundation presents the “Music Loves Autism” workshop, a series of specially designed musical activities, tailored to the children’s particular desires and abilities. In a safe environment, children experience collaboration and teamwork through music, building up towards the goal of a musical celebration designed by and featuring themselves.

The workshop’s main objective is to form a group of children and adults who communicate, play, enjoy and express themselves through music and visual arts. The program brings children and parents into contact with different musical instruments, musical-kinetic toys, with well-known children’s songs and original melodies, accompanied by piano and saxophone. In addition to musical-kinetic games and songs, through colors and shapes, individual and group art activities enrich children’s understanding of basic musical concepts, such as rhythm, volume, tone and melody.

Guided by special sounds and images, as well as by instructors and musicians, children benefit greatly, seeing their creative and perceptual ability enhanced. In addition, parents have the opportunity to be equally involved as their children in play, finding new ways of communicating with them.

On February 10 & 24, and on March 3, 10, 17 & 24, the 2nd Athens workshop will be taking place. Two age groups can participate: Workshops for children 6-8 years old will be held from 4 pm-6 pm; workshops for children 9-12 years old will be held from 6 pm-8 pm.
